“A fine beer may be judged by only one sip, but it is better to be thoroughly served"
anon
At The White Horse we have a passion for Real Ales and take great care to ensure they are served in the best condition. We have a continually changing selection of Ales from around the country, but primarily from smaller independent breweries. Our House Bitter is Ringwood Best, brewed just 10 miles from the Pub.
Odd But True ...
The name of the beer paid to stonemasons working on the Pyramids of ancient Egypt was "kash", from which comes the modern name for money - "cash".
Another name for beer in the ancient world was "boozah", which survives today as both a slang name for a British pub and a heavy drinker "boozer".
During the Middle Ages, Governments and Town Councils in the British Isles and mainland Europe employed officials known as "ale conners". Their job was to test the quality of ale brewed for commercial sale. They would test it by pouring some ale on to a wooden bench, then sitting in the puddle. If their leather breeches were stuck to the seat, then the beer was considered to be good quality!
