Originally built in 1420 as a residence for the Bishop of Winchester, the building became a public house in 1599. Since then, there have been a number of changes to the building, resulting in what is now The White Horse.
Throughout its history, various people have left their mark. Bobby Shafto was returned to the public as a Downton MP from the balcony and Elizabeth Rose, the Bishop’s House Keeper, can still be found wandering around the upstairs accommodation and the Stables, together with Charley’s faithful dog Bertie who died in the summer and now keeps an eye on the coffee shop named after him!
